Distribution Of School Uniforms And Sandals By The Government

 President John Mahama yesterday announced that the government would distribute 500,000 free school uniforms and 100,000 pairs of sandals for pupils in deprived areas across the country to boost basic education.

That, he said was in addition to free exercise books being offered to
children in schools as part of the government’s determination to enhance access to basic education.

President Mahama made the announcement when he commissioned an additional Millennium School block constructed by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly at Salvation Army Cluster of Schools at Mamprobi in Accra.

The President, who commissioned the facility as part of his Accounting to the People tour of the Greater Accra Region, gave the assurance that the government would continue to invest heavily in the education sector in order to achieve the desired targets.

According to him, after solving the energy crisis, micro-economic instability and investing in infrastructure, education has secured the full attention of the government.

That, he said, was because the development of the nation’s human resource through education was vital for socio-economic progress.

He believed that the investment in education infrastructure would help to provide a conducive environment for effective learning.

Touching on his promise to build 200 Community Day SHSs, President Mahama indicated that 123 were under construction out of which 70 would be ready be soon for use.

He commended the AMA for the foresight in revamping education in the metropolis, saying objectives were in line with government’s desire to build modern schools to offer conducive learning environment for children.

He also urged communities to be actively involved in the management of education, adding that research has shown that community involvement helps to enhance the management and performance of schools.

The three-storey disability friendly block, which has science, computer laboratory, library and toilet facilities, classrooms for JHS, primary and kindergarten, is the third Millennium School block built for the Salvation Army Cluster of Schools following the AMA’s abolishing of the shift system.

Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, Mayor of Accra, in his remarks, noted that the assembly was constructing more of such schools to relieve schools of congestion and dilapidated school structures.

After the commissioning, the President visited Chorkor where he interacted with fishermen, fishmongers, market women and residents.

He also called on the La Mantse and his elders, after which he inspected the Teshie to Spintex road project.
